Ecology and Landscape Science

Prof. Dr. Hansjörg Küster

We study the formation of landscapes and their changes over time through natural and anthropogenic processes. Furthermore, the section works on fundamental ecological questions related to the interaction of organisms in an ecosystem with each other and with their environment.

Landscapes, ecology and evolution are inseparably intertwined and constantly changing. The world is ours to discover.

LANDSCAPES IN CONSTANT CHANGE

The section is interested in the description and investigation of landscapes and ecosystems. For these are not by chance as they are. Shaped by geological and climatic events and constantly changed by evolution, the state of a landscape can only be described temporarily. For example, the north-west German lowlands today do not look the same as they did 10,000 years ago. Anthropogenic and ecological influences have changed the landscape as we know it today.
And this change is continuing. Be it through agriculture and forestry, through climate change or the evolutionary "arms race" that has been taking place since life on earth has existed. This applies not only to Germany, but to almost every ecosystem worldwide.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

It takes experience to identify and evaluate the processes in ecosystems. We regularly organise field trips to enable students to acquire this practical experience. From Helgoland to the Black Forest, we investigate the site-typical features of the respective landscape.
We work closely with the "Großes Heiliges Meer" field office of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen Lippe (LWL) to investigate water ecology issues. Thanks to decades of cooperation, we regularly offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral theses on various biological or biochemical topics for students interested.
